Recurring19TH Annual Black History Month Contest Winners

At the 19TH Annual Black History Month Creative Expressions Awards Program sponsored by the New York Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.which was held on Sunday, February 8, 2015, Redemption Christian Academy received special recognition for having three winning student entries.

Paris Johnson, grade 7, received an award for her poem on Bessie Coleman who was born in 1896 and became the first African American female pilot. Khari Croley, grade 8, received an award for his artistic rendition of Benjamin Banneker, the inventor of America’s first clock and the co-designer of the layout of Washington, D.C. Denise Ratley, grade 11, received an award for her artistic rendition of Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play major league baseball in the modern era. What accentuates the accomplishments of these RCA students is that out of 280 contest entries from the Capital District, there were only 28 winners, and three of these winners are Redemption Christian Academy students.

The Annual Black History Month Creative Expressions contest received recognition from New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo. Angelicia A. Morris, the first and youngest African American female to serve as Executive Director of the Schenectady County Human Rights Commission, delivered an inspiring keynote speech at the awards program.

In addition, these three RCA students were asked to present their poetry and art at the 2015 Interagency Black History Month Celebration which was held at the Clarke Theater in the New York State Museum.

Redemption Christian Academy’s three students’ entries were published in newspapers, and videotaped and aired on radio and television. CONGRATULATIONS on your awards-- Paris, Khari, and Denise!
